October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, and this year, I want to take a moment to celebrate not only my incredible son, Teddy, but also the beauty of inclusion and the journey we’ve had in celebrating all abilities. Teddy is represented in Little Bird Vintage Designs as the "Teddy Bird," a vibrant orange bird with a mohawk—much like the joyful, unique spirit that Teddy himself embodies. This post is about celebrating Teddy, the lessons he has brought into our lives, and the way his story inspires us to embrace everyone’s unique abilities.

Introducing Teddy Bird – The Inspiration Behind the Character

When we first found out we were expecting our fifth child, it was a complete surprise. We were already raising four wonderful children, and I thought we were past the baby stage of our lives. But as life often does, it had other plans for us—plans that were filled with uncertainty but also joy. Teddy was born with Down Syndrome, and from the moment we knew, he transformed our family in ways we couldn’t have imagined. To honor Teddy and share his story with the world, we created Teddy Bird. Teddy Bird is vibrant, with bright orange feathers and a mohawk, standing out proudly as a symbol of individuality and joy. The three up arrows on Teddy Bird’s chest represent the extra chromosome that makes him who he is—strong, unique, and so full of light. Teddy Bird is more than just a character; he’s a reflection of how we’ve learned to embrace life’s surprises and find beauty in every challenge.

The "Celebrating All Abilities" Collection

Teddy’s arrival in our lives inspired the "Celebrating All Abilities" Collection—a collection that brings together all five of our trademarked animals as a symbol of unity, strength, and inclusivity. Each animal represents a value that our family holds dear, and together, they show that we are stronger as a flock when we celebrate what makes each of us unique.

In this collection, Teddy Bird stands proudly alongside Ava Bird, Leo Lion, Max Octopus, and Kalli Gecko, representing love, strength, adaptability, resilience, and joy. These animals aren’t just characters—they’re symbols of the lessons we’ve learned through raising our children, including the powerful lesson of celebrating all abilities. The collection is a reminder that every member of our flock brings something special, and that together, we can create a beautiful and supportive community.

Lessons From Teddy – Finding Joy in Every Moment

Teddy has taught us countless lessons, but perhaps the most important one is that joy can be found in the smallest, simplest moments. Teddy’s smile lights up the room, his laughter is contagious, and his spirit has taught our family to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the present. Life with Teddy is not without challenges, but it’s those challenges that have shown us how strong we can be when we face them together.

Through Teddy, we’ve learned the importance of resilience—of showing up every day, even when the path ahead feels uncertain. He has reminded us that every individual, no matter their abilities, has something valuable to contribute. In our family, each child is a valued member of our flock, and valued members contribute. The love and light that Teddy brings to our family is a testament to the power of inclusion—of creating space for everyone to shine in their own unique way.

Embracing Differences as a Family

In our home, we talk openly about differences, and we celebrate them. Each of our five children is unique, and we encourage them to see their individuality as something to be proud of. Teddy has helped us all to understand that inclusion starts at home—it’s in the way we talk to each other, support each other, and lift each other up.

We want to encourage other families to do the same. Inclusion isn’t just a word—it’s an action, a choice we make every day to value and celebrate every person for who they are. Whether it’s through storytelling, having open conversations, or simply creating space for each family member’s unique gifts to shine, inclusion is something that we can all practice. It’s about seeing the beauty in every person and recognizing that our differences are what make us stronger.

Celebrating With #GracesFlock This October, we invite you to join us in celebrating Down Syndrome Awareness Month. Let’s celebrate Teddy and all the incredible individuals who remind us that every life is beautiful and valuable.
